Vooglam x Mona Matsuoka The international talent partners with the avant-garde eyewear brand for a deeply personal six-piece collection

It has long been said that your eyewear is the window to the soul— or, something like that. No matter the colloquialism’s origin, the newest collaboration from Vooglam— created in tandem with DJ and model Mona Matsuoka— has inspired this fresh turn of phrase. The iconic sunglass brand and the international fashion superstar have teamed up to capture Matsuoka’s kaleidoscopic identities– artist, runway veteran, resident mixer at Manhattan’s VIP-infested haunt Jean’s– in half a dozen Vooglam styles.

Matsuoka’s signature grit graces every silhouette, drawing on her blended Japanese-American heritage. Who better to communicate the bridge between Matsuoka’s runway career (during which Christian Dior and Chanel were frequent employers) and her domination of New York’s nightlife scene than the daring Vooglam? The U.S. eyewear label and the former Vogue Japan Woman of the Year fashioned a six-frame capsule– entitled “Collision”— released July 28th. The collection of silhouettes emulates the explosive commingling of Matsuoka’s myriad talents. The best part? There’s a perfect fit for every personality.

Each frame is eponymously entitled based on the city it represents, charting Matsuoka’s personal history and honoring the cultures that have shaped the artist. Wherein the Meguro acts as the puffed, flirty cat-eye, Vooglam x Mona Matsuoka’s Okinawa is minimalist and rectangular, with a sweeping ‘M’ detailing the temple. In true Vooglam fashion, the Ebisu look defines the cultural moment with its liquid-metal ovular frame, giving neo-Y2k in all the right ways. Niseko, named for the sky-high Hokkaido town, is nearly weightless: a semi-rim supporting angular, frosted lenses. Ginza splashes in hues as vibrant as the district for which it’s named, stamped decidedly with a Mona Matsuoka crest on the acetate arm. Suzuka reads as most emblematic of Matsuoka’s musical identity— daring, sleek, and endlessly chic in a gradient shield shape. Throughout the lineup, Matsuoka’s ingenuity takes center stage. With nineteen possible combinations, between delectable colorways and optical lenses, each unique pair renders the wearer a multi-hyphenate luminary in their own right.
