Photochromic Lenses FAQ
Photochromic lenses are equipped with special molecules that respond to ultraviolet (UV) light. When these lenses are exposed to UV rays, a chemical reaction darkens them. This reaction is reversed when UV light is reduced or absent, allowing the lenses to return to their clear state. This feature provides the convenience of not having to switch between regular glasses and sunglasses based on lighting conditions.
The photochromic technology operates based on the effect of UV light on molecules, causing them to react and change color. Temperature can influence the reaction time of these molecules, possibly leading to deeper or lighter tints. However, the primary factor influencing color change remains the UV exposure.
Photochromic lenses are less effective in cars because most modern car windshields are designed to block UV rays, which are necessary for activating the darkening effect of these lenses. While they do still change to some extent, the reaction is significantly reduced compared to direct exposure to sunlight outdoors. If you require tinted vision for driving, you might consider prescription sunglasses or specifically designed driving lenses.
Photochromic lenses are primarily designed to react to ultraviolet (UV) light, but they also offer some degree of blue light filtering. Although UV light and blue light are distinct, blue-violet light, which is high-energy and close to UV on the electromagnetic spectrum, can be partially filtered by these lenses. While the sun is a major source of blue light, digital devices also emit it, which can strain the eyes during prolonged use. Therefore, while photochromic lenses can reduce exposure to some high-energy blue-violet light, they are not as effective as lenses specifically labeled as "blue light-blocking glasses" or "blue blockers," which are tailored to enhance visual comfort during extensive screen time. Note that lenses with a index higher than 1.57 tend to have blue light filtering capabilities.
Yes, all the photochromic lenses we offer are an excellent choice for your eye health, as they block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. This protection helps reduce potential risks to eye health from UV exposure.
